FIFA FUTSAL WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS - PRELIMINARY ROUND
08.04.2026
Park Vendia Hallen, Hjorring, Denmark

MALTA...1
DENMARK...5

Malta endured a tough outing against a sharp and efficient Denmark side, falling to a 5-1 defeat in a high-tempo futsal clash that punished early defensive lapses but still offered glimpses of promise for the hosts. This was the first outing of Roberto Menichelli's side in the FIFA Futsal World Cup Qualifiers in the tournament being played in Hjorring, Denmark.

Malta endured a tough start to the match, as Denmark imposed themselves almost immediately. After an early warning with a shot off the woodwork, William Gantzhorn opened the scoring on four minutes and six seconds, reacting quickest inside the area to put the visitors ahead. Just over two minutes later, Emil Rasmussen doubled Denmark’s advantage with a well-taken finish following a swift attacking move, capitalising on some space in the Maltese backline.

Denmark maintained relentless pressure, forcing goalkeeper Clint Mifsud into a series of important saves to keep the scoreline from escalating further in the opening stages.

Malta gradually began to settle into the contest, creating a number of chances of their own. Maikinho was particularly influential, testing the Danish defence with his movement and creativity, and coming close on several occasions, including an effort that struck the woodwork.

However, just as Malta seemed to be gaining momentum, Denmark struck again. Rasmussen grabbed his second goal of the match on 19 min 22 seconds, capitalising on space to make it 3-0. Barely a minute later, Oliver Børsting added a fourth, finishing off a well-worked move assisted by Johansson, leaving Malta with a mountain to climb before the interval.

Despite the setback, Malta showed admirable character and responded positively after the break. Their persistence paid off in the 25th minute when youngster Nathan Cope pulled one back. The forward finished confidently after a good assist by Marwan Telisi, offering a brief spark of hope for a potential comeback.

Malta continued to push forward, enjoying a better spell of possession and creating several scoring opportunities. Efforts from Michael Borg, Marwan Telisi, and Nathan Cope all tested the Danish defence, while Giancarlo Sammut came agonisingly close after striking the woodwork. At the other end, substitute goalkeeper Ryan Marmara was called into action and produced a number of saves to deny further Danish attempts.

Nevertheless, Denmark remained dangerous on the counter-attack and continued to create chances with their pace and precision. Their fifth goal arrived in the 33rd minute when Zakaria El-Ouaz found the net, effectively putting the result beyond doubt and capping off a clinical performance from the visitors.

In the closing stages, Malta kept battling and showed determination to reduce the deficit further, but a combination of missed chances and solid Danish defending ensured the scoreline remained unchanged.

While the result is disappointing, Malta can take some positives from their attacking phases and resilience after a difficult start. Focus now shifts to their next match, scheduled for Thursday 9th April at 15:30hrs against Andorra, where they will be aiming to bounce back with a stronger and more complete performance.
