An agreement between Komunità Malta and the Malta FA has been signed through which the ‘Ballun Crossbars’ project has been strengthened. The aim of this project is to contribute to the rehabilitation of individuals and to mental wellbeing through sport.
The signing of this agreement translates into an enhanced sports programme for individuals under the care of the Correctional Services Agency, the Detention Services Agency, and the Agency for the Welfare of Asylum Seekers (AWAS).
Minister Byron Camilleri described this agreement as clear evidence of the work and commitment being made by the Government to ensure that these individuals truly receive the necessary attention for their rehabilitation.

These sports programmes include football training, physical training sessions, personal development and literacy programmes, as well as motivational talks, with the aim of promoting discipline, responsibility, and social integration.
The Minister reiterated that sport has a unique unifying element, improves both physical and mental health, and promotes inclusivity, and therefore is considered a social investment towards stronger individuals.
For his part, Malta FA President Bjorn Vassallo expressed his satisfaction that the Association is part of this project, which continues to strengthen the elements of education, sport, and the social aspect within detention facilities. He explained that the Malta FA will continue to offer this training through specialised coaches, while also expanding the service to reach more members of society and contribute to effective rehabilitation.
He also emphasised the importance of giving detained individuals the opportunity to develop and grow in a positive and healthy environment as part of their integration into society.
The agreement covers a period of three years and includes training services, their coordination, and the resources requited to ensure that the programme is done in an effective and sustainable manner.
