Refereeing must develop constantly, to keep in tune with the demands of the modern-day high-pace game.  The speed and movement of today's football, means that match officials must be well-prepared, highly-trained athletes with the mental strength to withstand pressure and the ability to take split-second decisions with confidence and consistency.

The Malta FA’s refereeing department has kept pace with the demands and has organised a pre-season seminar for Cat1 / Cat 2 / Cat 3 Match Officials.  The seminar was spread over three days.  At the same time a one day seminar was organised for Grassroots referees.

The department takes great care in nurturing and promoting the sector – fostering the elite and up-and-coming referees, and ensuring that newcomers are given the proper instructions and advice for their duties.

The seminars featured, amongst other things, fitness tests, analysis of match situations to help referees in the constant search for improvement and consistency in decision-making, and exchanges of experiences and ideas among the refereeing fraternity.

The seminar for Grassroots referees helps in the fostering of young match officials.

The seminars were coordinated by the Director of Referees Alan Mario Sant who was assisted by experienced ex-referees and ex-assistant referees Chris Lautier, Clayton Pisani, William Debattista, Mario Apap, Gaetano Degabriele, Peter Abela and Ronald Zammit.
