The Malta FA mourns the demise of Tony Abela

The Malta FA is deeply saddened by the news that Tony Abela has passed away, aged 66.

A notary by profession, Abela served as president of Rabat Ajax FC between seasons 1983/84 to 1989/90, the club’s most glorious period. Under his leadership, Rabat Ajax won the major honours in domestic football, including back-to-back league championships between 1984 and 1986, and the FA Trophy in 1985-86.  Rabat also won two Super Cups during the season 1984/85 when they defeated Zurrieq 2-0 and 1985/96 when they triumphed over Hibernians (4-2 aet).

President Bjorn Vassallo broke the news during yesterday's General Assembly and on behalf of the Malta FA, he conveyed his condolences to the family and friends of Tony Abela at this sad time.
