The Malta FA notes with satisfaction the publication of Legal Notice 147 of 2024 on Income from Sports Activities. The legislation extends a tax incentive in the form of a reduced tax rate of 7.5% to a number of roles involved in sports activity. Such rate was previously afforded only to professional players and coaches.

The Association had long advocated for this extension after having previously proposed the existing tax regime for professional players and coaches. Additional roles which will now benefit from this tax rate include match officials, medical staff, and sports administrators.

This new legislation is believed to be a positive step towards encouraging employment in sport and professionalising the game from an administrative and technical point of view. In this regard it will undoubtedly help clubs be better positioned when recruiting technical and administrative staff.
