Malta FA strengthens matchday safety through 2026 Stewards Training Course

The Malta FA has successfully concluded the 2026 edition of its Stewards Training Course, marking another important milestone in strengthening safety and security standards at football matches across Malta.

This course was introduced following the implementation of new legislation last year, which requires sports venues to engage trained and licensed stewards. Certified stewards will complement the work of the Police by taking on a range of event safety and spectator management responsibilities, allowing Police officers to focus more effectively on their core duties.

Delivered in line with the new legal framework, the Malta FA Stewards Training Course reinforces the requirement for sporting events to be supported by qualified and licensed personnel.

Participants successfully completed a 30-hour accredited programme, comprising 10 study units, combining theoretical learning with practical application.

The curriculum covered a wide range of topics, including crowd management, spectator safety, customer care, emergency procedures, communication, conflict management, legal responsibilities and operational best practices.

Upon successful completion of the programme, participants are now eligible to obtain the recognised steward licence, which is now a legal requirement for individuals carrying out stewarding duties at sporting events.

Investing in the education and licensing of stewards reflects the Malta FA's ongoing commitment to creating a safer, more welcoming and professionally managed matchday environment for supporters, players, officials and all other stakeholders.

The course forms part of the Malta FA’s wider strategy to continue raising operational standards across Maltese football and to align local practices with recognised national and international safety and security standards.

During the closing ceremony, participants were presented with certificates recognising the successful completion of the course.

Addressing those present, Malta FA Vice President Adrian Casha congratulated the participants for their commitment and dedication towards making football stadia safer for everyone involved.

“Carry out your duties like good referees, by observing, communicating well, and by being proactive in your decisions,” he added.
