On Thursday afternoon, the Malta FA met with a delegation from the Nationalist Party to present its infrastructural plans, specifically the transformation of the Ta’ Qali Sports Complex.
The meeting, held at the Nationalist Party’s headquarters, was led by Nationalist Party Leader Dr Alex Borg and Malta FA Senior Vice President Dr Matthew Paris.
During the meeting, the two parties discussed the challenges in the sports sector, particularly when it comes to attracting investment for infrastructural projects. Additionally, the Malta FA also showcased the Ta’ Qali Masterplan, which seeks to upgrade and modernise facilities.

The Masterplan, first announced last year, seeks to modernise the National Stadium and its surrounding facilities. The Ta’ Qali Sports Complex, which covers an area of approximately 100,000 square metres, will be turned into a sustainable and eco-friendly sporting hub. This comes after the successful completion of the National Football Centre at the Malta FA Training Grounds, a project that cost a total of €15 million, offering a number of facilities, including a 400-seater, Category 1 stadium compliant with UEFA requirements.
The proposed redevelopment of the Ta’ Qali Sports Complex will focus on upgraded and modern facilities, enhanced spectator tribunes, improved sporting infrastructure, the development of complementary commercial facilities, the maximisation of the Centenary Stadium, and the potential creation of an additional training pitch.
Dr Paris is Chairperson of the Masterplan Committee, which also features technocrats, professionals, and practitioners, together with the support of external consultants.
In January, the Malta FA launched two stakeholder questionnaires, gathering feedback, observations and perspectives on the proposed way forward.
Dr Borg highlighted the importance of investing in modern sports facilities, and serious investment could incentivise sports tourism that could allow athletes who visit Malta to have an improved overall experience.
