The Malta FA took the opportunity to honour distinguished players and former Malta internationals Clayton Failla and Steve Borg, on their final appearances in domestic football.
Prior to the Meridianbet FA Trophy Final on Saturday, the two players were presented with a commemorative shirt by Malta FA President Bjorn Vassallo to mark their final matches, recognising their outstanding contribution to the local game.
Clayton Failla
With Saturday’s Final, Failla reached an impressive tally of 630 matches in domestic football, a remarkable feat. The left-sided full-back had an incredible career, playing for a number of distinguished clubs. He started his career at Zabbar St Patrick FC, before joining Hibernians FC. Afterwards, he moved to Sliema Wanderers FC, before rejoining Hibernians, the club he would stay at for six years. Failla proceeded to have spells playing for Floriana FC, Birkirkara FC and Hamrun Spartans FC, before then enjoying a successful time at Mosta FC. His career came to a close with a season at Gzira United, capped off with the Meridianbet FA Trophy Final on Saturday.

Over the course of his career, Failla won three Premier League titles, the FA Trophy four times, and the Super Cup three times.
He racked up an impressive tally of 58 caps for the Malta National Team, scoring twice in the process.

Steve Borg
Borg’s appearance in the Meridianbet FA Trophy Final took him up to 487 domestic matches, with the towering defender ending his career on a high having secured the trophy.
The defender became synonymous with passion and dedication on the pitch, having gained plenty of experience playing both in Malta and abroad. Borg started his career at Mosta, before joining Valletta in 2008. He remained with the Lilywhites until 2015, when he spent a season abroad with Cypriot club Aris Limassol. Following that spell, he returned to Malta with Valletta, before joining Gzira in 2020. Borg had a successful stint at Hamrun Spartans, before returning to Valletta, finishing his career at the club from the capital.

Throughout his distinguished career, Borg won eight Premier League titles, four FA Trophies, eight Super Cup titles, the Anniversary Cup and the Jubilee Cup.
Borg made 82 caps for the Malta National Team, with his final one coming against Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2025. He also scored three goals in National Team colours.

Thank you Clayton and Steve for your fantastic contribution to Maltese football!
