Malta Football Association
Football Academy

The Malta F.A aspiration of its youth academy is to develop every young footballer who forms part of its academy to make the step from the academy to our U17, U19 , U21 National Teams with the ultimate aim of progressing players to the Senior National Team.

Our youth department is formed of 2 groups: the academy U13, U14, U15/16 and the Youth National Teams U17, U19 and U21 who participate in full international UEFA competitive games. Our philososphy ensures that coaching and training follow from one age group to another so that as many players as possible develop the necessary level to make it from one age group to another at the end of each football season.

Our training methodology is game related and aims to improve the technical and tactical level of each individual player and to elevate him to reach the physical and psychological potential to aquire the rhythm, intensity and game intelligence expected in international games. We also give due care to their academic, education, and welfare with the end aim to make them succeed also in their private life.

Each academy squad, formed of 23 players (including 3 goalkeepers), train separately under their respective professional staff. Due to the size of Malta we have the great advantage to bring players for training 3 times a week.

The staff compliment of each team is made of a head coach, assistant  coach, physical coach, goalkeepers’ coach and a  physiotherapist, with an academy Sport Medical doctor and psychologist.

Every year over 100 boys in each age group (U13, U14, U15/16) are called for trials with the best boys progressing for 4 further trial stages before they are finally called to form part of their respective squads. Our academy coaches continue to scout young players throughout the year.

All our youth National Teams technical staff are experienced Pro Licenced coaches and our academy coaches have UEFA Pro, UEFA A and UEFA Elite A qualifications.

Our Female department is formed of 2 groups: the academy U12, U14, U16 and the Youth National Teams U17, U19 who participate in full international UEFA competitive games. In each age group we have a group of twenty five players. Our philososphy ensures that coaching and training performed by our coaches are coordinated from one level to another, to finally reach their best in our Woman National Team.

Girls joining the academy are scouted from school football festivals, local clubs games and from our After School’s football activities and games for young girls.

Similar to the boys’ academies, our youth and academy squads have eleven qualified coaches including seven female coaches, physiotherapists, medical doctor and a psychologist.

All our youths national and academy teams, men and women, train at our Ta Qali Training Grounds, with three grass pitches and one synthetic pitch, all full sized. An equipped Gynasium and physiotherapy clinic is also available to all the players of the senior, youths and academy teams. Most of the training sessions are during early afternoon and evenings. However our U16 and U17 National teams players are released from school every Tuesday morning  to attend double training sessions at our Ta Qali Training grounds.

We have full technical collaboration with the football section of the Natioal Sport School. Three days a week, our academy and Youth National Teams’ technical staff are engaged in morning coaching with the  School’s U13 to U16 squads as most of their players form part of our Youth National squads.
