MALTA FACE SERBIA IN WORLD CUP QUALIFIER

Malta’s women’s team will play another Group Three match in the World Cup qualifying round on Thursday 13th February at the Centenary Stadium Ta’ Qali. It will be our third outing in a campaign that has so far yielded two blanks in two defeats in October and November, 2-0 against Israel away and 5-0 against Denmark on home soil. This time our opponents will be Serbia who will go all out to erase their loss against Israel and thus make up lost ground in the qualifiers.    National team coach Pierre Brincat was prompt to point out the strength of our opponents. ‘They are a very good team and the draw against the strong Danes confirms this. From what I have heard they were unlucky to end as losers against Israel,’ he said. ‘This competition is a useful experience for us as it will be an opportunity for the girls to compete against top players. We are introducing young players from our Under 19 squad. Nevertheless, our objective is to score goals and at least obtain the first point in this competition. Referring to our team’s future commitments, Brincat mentioned the upcoming double fixtures which will be a stern test for his players. ‘This is a new and hard experience we have.
