The Women’s Under 16 League started last weekend with six of the ten participating teams playing their first match of the 2013-14 season.   Hamrun Spartans beat Mosta 5-3, while Mġarr United had the better of Hibernians 1-0. The other match between Gozo and Kirkop United ended in a 1-1 draw. The other teams in the competition are Birkirkara, Pembroke Athleta, Raiders Luxol and Tarxien Rainbows. The championship is expected to provide a platform for the introduction of budding girls who are hoping to make progress and eventually make the grade to the senior teams and then to national team status. Meanwhile, the opening matches resulted in balanced affairs, not the least that between Mosta and Hamrun Spartans despite a 5-3 win for the Hamrun girls whose slight edge told in the end. The other matches turned out to be keener ones. Kirkop and Gozo shared the spoils after both sides showed some neat touches, while Mġarr managed to pip Hibernians in a contest that had the teams creating inviting chances, with Mġarr’s goalkeeper Rachelle Borg standing out as she was instrumental in preserving her team’s one-goal lead. It is to be noted that after phase one of the competition the ten teams will be split into two groups. The top five will form group A and the bottom five will form group followed by another round.
