Demise of Maurice Walsh

The MFA are deeply saddened to learn that earlier this morning, Maurice Walsh, former football player of Sliema Wanderers and the Malta national team, has passed away.Apart from a number of appearances with the MFA XI, Malta’s unofficial national team in the 1950s and 1960s, Walsh made one full cap for Malta, a substitute appearance in the away Friendly against Tunisia on 8 March 1959 (0-0).Maurice Walsh was 91 years of age. Walsh made his senior debut for Sliema Wanderers in the old firm 1st Division derby against Floriana on 15 January 1949, a match Sliema won 3-2 with Walsh immediately scoring two of the goals. He remained with the Blues until 1962, making 147 appearances, scoring 53 goals. During his 13 years playing for the Wanderers, Maurice Walsh won three League Championships, two FA Trophies, two Cassar Cups and four Scicluna Cups. He was transferred to Senglea Athletic in the Third Division for season 1962/63 but hung up his boots after only one season. In 1955 and 1958 he also ‘guested’ for Victoria Athletics and Nadur Olympians in the Gozo league.The MFA is sending their condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.
