The MFA Women’s League will resume following the Malta women’s national team duties in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup against Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina. In this week’s slate of league fixtures, the key match will be between leaders Birkirkara and third-place Swieqi United which will take place at the Centenary Stadium, on Tuesday. Three points separate Birkirkara and Swieqi after the first five league outings. The Stripes are currently leading the championship with 13 points after registering four wins and a draw - a 0-0 stalemate against fellow title challengers Mġarr United. Led by Melania Bajada, the Stripes made their intentions clear from the start in this campaign as they boast the best offensive record with 27 goals. They share the best defensive record with Mġarr, being the only two teams that have kept a clean sheet in every game. Malta women’s international Alishia Sultana remains Birkirkara’s top scorer with five goals. On the other hand, Swieqi are at the back of a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Mġarr which denied them the chance to join Birkirkara at the summit of the league prior to the November international window. Nenad Tomic’s team have the second-best offensive record with 24 goals and have conceded just 4 times in the process. Midfielder Dorianne Theuma has five goals to her name as she is Swieqi’s top scorer. The other unbeaten team in the league alongside Birkirkara, Mġarr, will take on debutants San Ġwann as they will eye another win to consolidate their leadership. Michael Mangion’s team fired on all cylinders in their clou match against Swieqi last month, with Francesca Chircop grabbing a brace while Amber Grech and Maia Debono scored a goal each as well. Brenda Borg is leading the league’s top scorer list with six goals so far. San Ġwann, on their part, have so far scored one point in five outings after their 0-0 draw with Mtarfa. On Wednesday, Raiders Lija and Kirkop United will wrap up this week’s fixtures with an intriguing direct encounter. Just one point separates fourth-place Raiders and fifth-place Kirkop as they have seven and six points respectively. Both teams registered two wins in five league outings but Raiders sit ahead of Kirkop thanks to their surprising draw agains title challengers Swieqi, last month. THIS WEEK’S FIXTURES TUESDAY – 20.30 Birkirkara vs Swieqi United, Centenary Stadium Mġarr United vs San Ġwann, Mġarr Ground WEDNESDAY – 20.30 Raiders Lija vs Kirkop United MD7 bye – Mtarfa.
