Maltese football is mourning the death of one of its most respected and dedicated administrators as Tony Bezzina, the President of Premier League club Hibernians FC, passed away today. He was 72. ‘Is-Sur Tony’, as he was affectionately known, was the longest-serving president in the top division, having been at the helm of Hibernians since 1978. Bezzina, who was also the president of the Premier Division Standing Committee, was honoured by the state for his sterling service to football as, in 2019, he was awarded il-Midalja għall-Qadi tar-Repubblika. “We are all deeply saddened by the news that Tony Bezzina has passed away,” Bjorn Vassallo, the President of the Malta Football Association, said. “Tony was synonymous with Hibernians FC, making an extraordinary contribution to the club for almost five decades, as well as to Maltese football. “Above all, Tony was a true gentleman who has always been held in high esteem by one and all. He will be badly missed.” On a sad day for Maltese football, Vincent Tabone, the long-serving member of the Valletta FC committee and club director, also passed away, aged 72. The Malta FA extends its profound condolences to the family, relatives and friends of Tony Bezzina and Vincent Tabone at this sad time.
