The first edition was great, the second promises to be even bigger and better. Building on the encouraging response for the inaugural BOV ePremier League, won by Santa Lucia FC player Christian Spiteri, the Malta Football Association is organising the second edition of the domestic esports championship in collaboration with GMR Entertainment and Electronic Arts (EA). The agreement the Malta FA signed with Electronic Arts last year represented a milestone for local esports as it enables local EA SPORTS™ FIFA 21 players the opportunity to further their careers while representing one of the clubs in the BOV Premier League, the country’s flagship football competition. The 2020/21 BOV ePremier League is being expanded as all Maltese residents aged 16 and over who have a valid EA account can apply to compete in the three online qualifiers with the first scheduled to take place on December 16. Every single-elimination tournament will have a maximum of 128 players. The top eight from each of the three initial online qualifiers advance to the offline qualifiers where they will be joined by the eight players who finished 6th to 13th in the 2019-20 BOV ePremier League standings. The players will be facing each other in a six-round Swiss format tournament with the top 11 progressing to the main competition. The top-placed five players in last season’s BOV ePremier League enter the fray at this stage with each of these 16 ‘finalists’ representing a club from this season’s BOV Premier League. Kicking off in March 2021, the main competition will see the 16 players divided into four groups with the GSL format being adopted for the group stage. Every match will be played on two legs. The main knock-out stage will be played in May with the 16 competitors from the previous stage seeded according to their positions in the groups with the top player in a group facing the bottom-placed player from another group. The knock-out phase will be on a single-elimination form with matches played over two legs. Follow all the updates on http://www.maltaepremierleague,com ABOUT ELECTRONIC ARTSElectronic Arts Inc. is a global leader in digital interactive entertainment.
