Malta FA saddened by death of Francis Bonnici

The Malta Football Association is saddened to learn the news that former Birkirkara FC forward Francis Bonnici has passed away. He was 85. Born on May 9, 1934, Bonnici is synonymous with Birkirkara FC as he was a leading player for the Stripes between 1952 and 1972. Bonnici, who played as a forward, spent 20 seasons with Birkirkara, of which 12 were in the top division. Bonnici, affectionately known as ‘Il-Lula’, made one appearance for the national team. He earned his only cap in a friendly match against an Italian Serie C selection, played on 8th March, 1964 at the Empire Stadium, coming on for Eddie Theobald. The Italian Serie C selection won the match 2-0. The Malta FA conveys its profound condolences to the family and friends of Francis Bonnici at this sad time.
