BOV SECOND DIVISION LEAGUE 2019/20

MARSAXLOKK   2
MĠARR UNITED 2

(HT 1-2) (Victor Tedesco Stadium Stadium)

0-1 J.L. Micallef 5, 0-2 L. Doric 23, 1-2 J. Spiteri 44, 2-2 C. Degabriele 94.

Marsaxlokk salvaged a point from this encounter with fellow promotion contenders Mġarr United thanks to a stoppage-time goal by defender Christian Degabriele.

Mġarr United took the lead after only five minutes when a defensive error allowed Jamie Lee Micallef to head past Magri into an empty net. Marsaxlokk appeared stunned by this early goal and fell further behind on 23 minutes when Lazar Doric profited from another defensive lapse to shoot home.

Marsaxlokk reopened the issue before the break when the referee in charge awarded a penalty after Kenneth Aquilina was fouled inside the box. Captain Pablo Doffo stepped up but his shot was well saved by Gauci with the rebound falling to Josuel Spiteri who slotted home.

Marsaxlokk began the second half strongly but Mġarr created two good chances on 61 and 66 minutes. At first, a Marsaxlokk defender almost committed an own goal as his clearance came off the crossbar whilst Lyden Micallef’s low shot ended just wide of the post.

The Southseasiders kept pressing and had a goal disallowed on 86 minutes for offside. But, in the dying seconds, Marsaxlokk dramatically equalised with Degabriele heading home from a corner.

BOV THIRD DIVISION LEAGUE 2019/20

MSIDA ST JOSEPH 3
SIĠĠIEWI 2

(HT 2-0) (Sirens Stadium)
1-0 L. Xuereb 12, 2-0 T. Thomas 23, 2-1 M. Canate Vega, pen, 75, 3-1 C. Quaranta 80 pen., 3-2 M.Canate Vega 92

There was much at stake in this match, especially for Msida St Joseph who had to win the game to stay in touch with the other four other promotion contenders.

Msida enjoyed a perfect start as young starlet Lian Xuereb opened the scoring for Msida in the 12th minute and on 23 minutes, veteran striker Timmy Thomas doubled their lead. Siġġiewi took a while to get going and it was not until the latter stages of the game that they made a reaction.

In the 75th minute, they were awarded a penalty which was converted by Colombian livewire Manuel Canate Vega. Five minutes later, however, Msida also won a penalty with Ciro Quaranta making no mistake from the spot. Deep into added time, Canate Vega scored Siġġiewi’s second goal, but it was too little too late for the Yellow Reds.

A minute before Siġġiew’s goal, Msida midfielder Isaac Chircop received his second caution for time wasting and was sent off.

A very important win for the team of Giuseppe Cristaldi, who are now one point behind a group of three teams, Kirkop, Siġġiewi and Għargħur, who have all collected 33 points. With six matches to go, the race for promotion is wide open.
