BOV First Division leaders Żejtun Corinthians were surprisingly beaten by mid-table Qormi last weekend. Young substitute Luke Farrugia scored Qormi’s winner on the hour, heading in a Michael Borg free-kick.

The Corinthians enjoyed more ball possession throughout the match, but Qormi played a solid tactical game and deserved their win. It was only Żejtun’s second defeat this season as, in the first round, Qormi won 3-0, achieving a double over the league leaders.

Lija Athletic failed to take full advantage of Żejtun’s slip-up as they had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Pietà Hotspurs. The latter might have taken all three points as Lija had to play with 10 men after defender Andre White was dismissed with a straight red card just after the break.

Brazilian forward Caetano Ze Lucas put Pietà 1-0 up on 38 minutes with Erjon Beu equalising for Lija in the 64th minute, his 21st goal of the season already.

On Friday night, the derby between St Andrews and Swieqi United ended in a one-all draw. Mattia Veselji opened the scoring on 69 minutes for St Andrews but five minutes from time, Ibrahim Salis equalised for Swieqi. St Andrews retained their third place in the standings as all direct competitors lost points in their respective games.

Qrendi United surprisingly lost 3-1 to Fgura United who moved off bottom place thanks to this precious win. Giovanni Galea scored a brace for Fgura, the first one within the minute after kick-off and the second on 22 minutes. In-between, Cleo Pereira equaliser for Qrendi on nine minutes but it was not their day as a minute before the break, Dennis Cartella scored a third goal for Fgura.

Pembroke Athleta featured in a goalless draw with now bottom team St George’s in a quiet encounter while Naxxar Lions missed a golden opportunity to move into a play-off spot on Monday night, losing 2-0 to Żebbuġ Rangers. Muda Fagbeja fired Żebbuġ ahead on 25 minutes with Randall Vella sealing Żebbuġ’s win with the very last kick of the match deep into added time.

Naxxar Lions midfielder Mead Mifsud played his 200th match in the First Division, becoming only the seventh player to reach this number at this level.

At the bottom of the table, Mqabba and Vittoriosa Stars played out a 1-1 draw in the last fixture at the Centenary on Sunday, a result which pleased neither side.

Mqabba took the lead thanks to a Alexsandro Ferreira penalty on 70 minutes but 11 minutes later, Stars substitute Shola Haruna Shodiya equalised.

Żejtun Corinthians 32 points; Lija Athletic 30; St Andrews, Qrendi 26; Naxxar Lions 25; Pembroke Athleta 24; Żebbuġ Rangers, Swieqi United, Qormi Pietà Hotspurs 20; Fgura United, Vittoriosa Stars 16; St George’s, Mqabba 15.
