Żejtun profit from Lija’s defeat to close gap at the top

Naxxar Lions had the better of league leaders Lija Athletic 3-2 in an entertaining clash last Saturday.

Albanian striker Erjon Beu opened the scoring for Lija in the 13th minute but just before the break, Naxxar hit twice, thanks to a Benjamin Essel goal on 34 minutes and a Gilberto Carrara penalty on the stroke of half-time.


Brazilian striker Edson Farias added a third for Naxxar Lions on the hour with Beu reducing the deficit in the 78th minute, his 14th league goal this season.


After six consecutive wins, Lija have now gone three matches without a win.


Also on Saturday, Żejtun Corinthians consolidated second place in the standings thanks to a 2-0 win over St George’s, their fourth consecutive win moving them within one point of Lija. Brazilian striker Roberio do Nascimento inspired Żejtun’s victory, scoring both goals – the first from a penalty on 38 minutes and second four minutes into the second half.


On Friday night, the 15th derby between St Andrews and Pembroke Athleta was won by the former with a 4-0 scoreline.


Alan Borg Olivier scored a brace on 30 and 74 minutes with the other two goals coming from Joseph Farrugia, from the penalty spot, on 68 minutes and Degran Jackson in the 76th minute.


Also on Friday, Qrendi beat Qormi 2-1. Freud Gnindokponou gave Qormi an early sixth-minute lead but Qrendi managed to turn the match around in the second half. Alexander Nilsson equalised from the penalty spot on 78 minutes with Dhonatan dos Santos scoring the winner on the stroke of full-time.


In the opening match on Sunday, Pietà Hotspurs edged Fgura United by the odd goal in three. The goals arrived late in the game with Ze Lucas putting Pietà 1-0 up from the penalty spot on 79 minutes. Barely a minute later, the Hotspurs doubled their lead with a goal from substitute James Scicluna. 


Fgura produced a late rally and were awarded a penalty with five minutes on the clock, converted by Alejandro Toncheff.


Żebbuġ Rangers made it two wins on the trot with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mqabba in Sunday’s second game. Saturday Nanapere scored the all-important goal on 77 minutes.


Match day nine came to an end with Vittoriosa Stars obtainining a 2-1 win over fellow strugglers Swieqi United. Guinean centre-back Ousmane Sidibe broke the deadlock for Vittoriosa on 33 minutes with Ibrahim Salis equalising for Swieqi seven minutes later.


Deep into stoppage time, Sidibe scored a second to secure Vittoriosa’s win.


Lija are still leading is still way with 19 points followed by Żejtun one point behind. St Andrews, Pietà and Qrendi sharing the third spot on 17 points, Naxxar Lions are on 16 points and Żebbuġ 14.


The gap between tenth and last place is just three points with Pembroke on 10, followed by Qormi and St George’s on nine, Swieqi with eight and Mqabba, Vittoriosa and Fgura with seven points.
