Birkirkara finished their commitments in this year’s edition of the UEFA Women’s Champions League after playing their final game against Wexford Youths Women in their qualification group, held in Lithuania.

Participating for the third straight time, Birkirkara faced three household names in their respective countries in the form of Gintra Universitetas of Lithuania, KF Vllaznia of Albania and Ireland’s Wexford Youths Women.

Unfortunately for Birkirkara, they failed to repeat last year’s feat when they clinched their first ever point in Europe as the Stripes lost all games despite putting solid showings in particular in the first two outings where they suffered identical 1-0 defeats to Gintra and Vllaznia.

For this tournament, Bajada selected 20 players including the returning Gabriella Zahra and four debutants in Kailey Willis, Kaycee Mifsud, Veronique Mifsud and Mariah Cardona who last year missed out on the competition due to age ineligibility.

Against Gintra, who were hosting the tournament, Birkirkara conceded an early goal which denied them any chance of rescuing at least a point, even though they had their numerous chances as well. Last season, Gintra advanced as far as the last 16 of the competition before bowing out against eventual runners-up Barcelona.

In their second game, Melania Bajada’s side crossed swords with Albania champions Vllaznia and in a repetition of the first game, they were once again denied due to an early goal.

Birkirkara’s final appointment saw them lose 7-2 to Ireland’s Wexford, with the latter finishing second in the group on six points, one behind who qualified to the round of 32.
