St George’s were crowned BOV Second Division champions on Friday after beating Fgura United 2-1 in a title decider at the Centenary Stadium.  The two clubs had already secured promotion to the BOV First Division league but a title decider was needed after they finished with the same number of points. A keenly-contested encounter saw St George’s take a 13th-minute lead through Mattia Mentosa but Fgura United captain Gibert Martin equalised five minutes later. The score stayed 1-1 heading into the final 20 minutes of the game but veteran midfielder Christian Cassar settled the outcome as he scored the winner for St George’s with 14 minutes remaining. Meanwhile, on Sunday (28/04), Żabbar St Patrick, who finished third from bottom in the BOV Second Division championship, will meet Msida St Joseph, who claimed third place in the third division – in the BOV Second Division Play-Off at the Luxol Stadium. The winner of this match will play in the second division next season. The game kicks off at 16.00.
