The Maltese football community is mourning the loss of Charles J. Scerri who passed away on Wednesday, aged 78.  Scerri dedicated most of his life to football, serving the game in different capacities for over five decades. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Charles Scerri,” Norman Darmanin Demajo, the President of the Malta Football Association, said. “Charles was a man for all seasons as he was a football player, FIFA referee, club official and a member of both the Malta FA Council and Executive Committee. “His passing marks a sad day for the Malta FA and the entire football community.” Scerri enjoyed a successful career as a football referee, both at domestic and international level. He was a FIFA referee in the seventies and eighties, officiating matches involving top clubs like Real Madrid, AC Milan, Juventus and Barcelona. Apart from his contribution to the refereeing sector, where he also controlled several important domestic matches, including no fewer than five FA Trophy finals and the Sons of Malta Cup and Testaferrata Cup finals, Scerri will also be remembered for his sterling service to his hometown club, Lija Athletic. After representing the club as a player between 1956 and 1966, Scerri became a member of the Lija Athletic committee in season 1996-97. Scerri occupied the role of club president for most of the 19 years he spent on the Lija Athletic committee. Scerri has also represented Lija Athletic as a member of both the Malta FA Council and the Executive Committee, besides sitting on various MFA boards. The Malta FA extends its profound condolences to the family and relatives of Charles J. Scerri during this difficult time.
