MALTA         4

A clinical first-half performance paved the way for an emphatic 4-1 victory for the Malta futsal team in their second friendly match against Northern Ireland at the National School of Sport on Saturday.

Keen to make amends for the harsh 2-1 defeat in the first friendly, the Maltese side, led by Dutch coach Vic Hermans, started the game on the front foot as they pressed for an early goal.

Andy Mangion opened the scoring inside the first four minutes with Rennie Tanti and Matthew Attard adding two more goals to give the hosts a 3-0 advantage.

Northern Ireland managed to pull one back but Mangion’s second goal sealed victory for Malta, the first in Hermans’s second spell as national futsal coach.

The two friendlies against Northern Ireland followed two other test matches against the Netherlands last month as part of Malta’s build-up for the FIFA Futsal World Cup qualifiers next year.

In January, the Malta futsal squad will be travelling to Northern Ireland to play another two friendlies.
