Birkirkara win women’s title for seventh time

Birkirkara retained the BOV Women's League title after beating rivals Hibernians 4-1 in a final-day showdown played in front of a sizeable crowd at the Charles Abela Stadium on Wednesday night. With this win, the Stripes finished four points ahead of Hibernians in the BOV Women’s League standings. Birkirkara women’s head coach Melania Bajada, who succeeded Shawn Meilak before the start of the season, became the first female coach to win the top honour in women’s football in our country. The Stripes were in a class of their own as they stormed into a four-goal lead before Dorianne Theuma pulled one back for Hibs in the closing stages of the game. Stephania Farrugia opened the scoring for the Stripes after 25 minutes, her eighth goal of the season.  Birkirkara kept pushing for a second goal and made their pressure count when Gabriella Zahra doubled their lead just before half-time.  After the change of ends, the script remained the same with the Stripes adding two more goals through promising forward Veronique Mifsud. Theuma scored the consolation goal for the 12-time championship winners to finish top of the scorers’ chart. At the end of the match, Ludovico Micallef, the Malta FA vice-president, presented the championship trophy to Farrugia, the Birkirkara captain. OTHER MATCHESIn other matches, Mġarr United came from behind to earn a 2-1 win over Raiders (Luxol). Monique Sultana put the Violets ahead but the Greens scored twice in the final quarter of the game. Rebecca D’Agostino converted from the penalty spot and Brenda Borg sealed the win on minute 88.  Kirkop United defeated Tarxien Rainbows 4-2 in the other match. Lara Theuma's own goal handed Kirkop the lead. Demi Magrin, Liis Pello and Liivi Sormus scored the other goals for Kirkop with Kailey Willis netting twice for Tarxien.  FINAL STANDINGSChampionship Pool: Birkirkara 49; Hibernians 45; Mġarr United 32; Raiders (Luxol) 28; Kirkop United 18; Tarxien Rainbows 8. Relegation Pool: Swieqi United 22; Fgura United 11; Mosta 4.  TOP SCORERDorianne Theuma, Hibernians – 22 goals.
