A medical room has just been installed at the Centenary Stadium as part of a project undertaken by the Malta Football Association to improve the medical facilities and level of first-aid treatment provided in all stadia where official matches from the Association’s competitions are played. This project, which is being co-ordinated by Malta FA Vice-President Dr Matthew Paris, is aimed at ensuring that the main stadia have a properly-equipped medical room which can be instantly used by paramedics treating injured players, match and team officials, and attendees. A call for quotations for the supply of medicinal products, supply of equipment on loan and the management of medical rooms was issued by the Malta FA last summer. “It is the intention of the Malta Football Association to enhance the medical response within all sites wherein its competitions are held,” the Malta FA had said when the call for quotations was launched. “Over the past months, the MFA has been engaged in efforts to improve the matchday experience, which shall also include the safety and care of athletes and attendees alike.” The project to ameliorate the medical facilities and response at local stadia followed a consultation process involving various stakeholders, including the Malta Football Players Association (MFPA), the Malta FA’s medical team as well as outsourced paramedics, and third-party contractors. These discussions led to a four-pronged strategy to address health and safety at football stadia, namely: (i) On-going first-aid programmes for club personnel; (ii) the introduction of minimum required pitch-side equipment; (iii) the development of a match injury protocol; (iv) the installation of an on-site medical room within every stadium In the coming weeks, the Malta FA will be holding a series of informative sessions for paramedics on how to use the medical rooms at local stadia. Dr Paris envisages that the installation of medical rooms at all the earmarked stadia will be completed by the end of January.
