Valletta and Luxol to contest futsal title final

Defending champions Valletta and Luxol will contest the final of the Elite Round of the Gatorade Futsal League after winning their respective semi-finals against Ħamrun Tre Angeli and Swieqi United. Taking a 6-2 lead into the second leg of their semi-final play-off against Ħamrun Tre Angeli, Valletta were also the better team during the second match, winning 8-4 to complete a 14-6 aggregate victory. Melvin Borg and Raphael Felipe Ortiz scored a brace apiece for Valletta who will be looking to defend their title. The second leg of the semi-final play-off between Luxol and Swieqi United was a mere formality after the former had established a 10-1 advantage in the opening match. Luxol were not ready to ease up in the second match, winning 11-2. Mark Zammit and Gian Carlo Sammut netted a hat-trick for the winners who will be renewing their rivalry with Valletta in the best-of-three final which starts on Friday at the Corradino Pavilion (kick-off 20.00). FIRST DIVISIONIn the First Division, leaders Sliema Wanderers maintained their march as they trounced Tarxien JMI 15-0. Aleksander Ribic scored five goals for the Wanderers while Uros Markovic had a hat-trick. Sliema remained five points clear of Msida St Joseph who produced another brilliant performance as they beat Qrendi 14-2 with George Frendo hitting five goals for the winners. Mrieħel ESS were held to a surprising 6-6 draw by bottom side Żurrieq Wolves. Ayoub Ahmed scored a hat-trick for Mrieħel while Russell Camilleri hit four for the Wolves. Ryan Gilmour Cassar scored twice as Qormi beat Marsascala Construct Furniture 5-1. Safi San Lorenzo also stayed on the winning track after beating Swieqi’s U-21 team 3-1.
