The traditional curtain raiser of the Super Cup will be on stage this evening at 19:00, at the Centenary Stadium, as the two most decorated teams in women’s football, Hibernians FC and Birkirkara FC, go head to head striving to take home the first silverware of the season.

Hibernians will be contesting the Super Cup final as champions of Malta, while Birkirkara have obtained the right to play the final, after finishing second in the league, with the Paolites conquering also the domestic cup last season, therefore in this scenario, the runner up of the league, would automatically be in the Super Cup contest.

The Paolites went through a busy summer, as they represented Malta in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, where they crossed swords with some of the best teams across Europe, such as FC Twente of Netherlands and Ferencvaros of Hungary. Meanwhile, they did not reshuffle their squad a lot in the transfer market, as they brought in only a couple of new acquisitions. Gozitan duo Emma Xuereb and Rebecca Bajada have joined Hibernians and have already featured with the champions of Malta last August, during their European commitments. In addition to this, Hibernians have also changed their coaching staff, replacing Keith Gouder with Jesmond Zammit, who will be delighted to have his first taste of women’s football in a showdown like this.

On the other hand, Birkirkara had no summer commitments, but to the contrary of Hibernians, they were very busy off the field, being one of the most active teams on the transfer market, starting with the appointment of former Pembroke Athleta’s coach, Shawn Meilak, as the new man at the helm of the club. Meilak and the committee working behind the scenes, were instrumental in strengthening the squad by bringing in various players including goalkeeper Rose Marie Baldacchino, defender Ann-Marie Said, youngster Leanne Micallef and forward Tracy Theuma, making a bold statement for next season’s title challenge.

As all eyes will be on this evening’s contest, the question will be whether it will be Hibernians’ sixth or Birkirkara’s fourth?

For those unable to attend the match, live coverage will be provided on the official page on Facebook, MFA Women’s Football.
