Malta does not boast of a winning streak on the international stage. Victories are few and far between and rarely did we go on a consecutive winning run of three matches.  Tomorrow’s friendly match against San Marino is of special significance since it presents the opportunity for our national team to record its fourth success on the trot in friendly encounters. The previous occasions when we won three successive friendly matches were in 1981 when we beat Indonesia, Thailand and Tunisia and in the 1999-2000 season when we had the better of Lebanon, Qatar and Azerbaijan. After our home victories against The Central African Republic in August last year (2-1) and Liechtenstein last February (2-1), followed by the 2-0 success against Luxembourg in June, our national team is aiming to register victory against San Marino which would be an unprecedented run of four consecutive wins in friendly matches. Apart from these statistical considerations, a victory against San Marino at the Stadio Olimpico in Serraville will certainly boost the morale of Pietro Ghedin’s squad in view of the team’s impending first two Group B matches in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil on the 7th of next month against Armenia on home soil and Italy away four days later. The prospects look good and all the Maltese look forward to Malta extending its streak of friendly successes tomorrow.
