The 2016/17 women’s football season started to take shape yesterday evening as the draws for the BOV Women’s First and Second Division and the MFA Women’s Under 17’s League were announced. Champions Hibernians will start their title defence against newly-promoted Gozo FC, while Birkirkara and Mgarr United will commence their league commitments with a mouth-watering direct contest. The other match from the First Division will see Kirkop United facing Raiders (Luxol).  Meanwhile, in the Second Division, Hamrun Spartans will take on Mosta in their opening match while Tarxien Rainbows and Kirkop United Team B will complete Matchday 1 schedule. Swieqi United will be in action in the following programme. The Senior leagues will both start on the 20th of September 2016 and will come to an end on the 26th of April 2017. While the First Division will be contested between six teams, like last season, the Second Division will be composed of five sides following the absences of Sliema Wanderers FC and Pembroke Athleta FC. Both leagues will be played on a round robin format throughout two rounds, with 60 matches to be played in the top tier and 40 matches in the second tier. The relegation and promotion play-off procedure will be part of the new season as well, with the 5th place team in the First Division crossing swords with the 2nd place team in the Second Division. Naturally, the 6th place team in the First Division will be relegated while the Second Division’s champions will clinch an automatic promotion. Last season, Kirkop United maintained their First Division status after seeing off Swieqi United in the relegation/promotion play-off. Matches from both divisions will be played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will be all scheduled for 20:15, except for Gozo FC’s matches which will be moved early to 18:00. Also, the home matches for the Gozitan side will be played at Kercem Ajax Ground at 11:00. Players aged 14 onwards on Matchday will be eligible to play in either league. In the meantime, the Under 17’s League will start on the 18th of September 2016 and will draw to a conclusion on the 7th of May 2017. With the inclusion of Fgura United FC, this league will have 11 participants, where initially they will play one match against the other 10 sides, while in the second round, the 11 sides will be divided into two sections. All matches will be played on Sundays, while unlike the Senior team, Gozo FC Under 16’s home matches are still to be determined. All girls born in the year 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 will be all eligible to take part in this league.
