Malta couldn’t have a better kick off to the tournament when against Belarus they forged ahead in the 20th second, after a splendid move from kickoff which ended with A. Spiteri lobbing the ball over the Belarus Goalkeeper. Yet in the 5th minute Malta were hit by misfortune when they lost their Goalkeeper through injury and in the 20’ conceded the draw. Notwithstanding this bad patch the Maltese boys took control of the match once more missing a glaring chance through M. Zarb, scoring the second goal in the 29’through K.Mifsud and hitting the post by C.Camilleri just before half time. In the second half though the coach made several changes our lads held tight but conceded a penalty in the 55’ saved brilliantly by D. Formosa. After this, with the ball going up and down, Malta was awarded a penalty which A. Attard converted to give his team a stronger lead.   Belarus made several attempts to save the game and managed to score their second goal in the 74’. Our boys held out till the end to earn a well deserved victory. Malta will play its second match vs Azerbaijan next Saturday at 10.30hrs  at the Centenary Stadium.
