Gianluca Lia Coaching duo Dorianne Theuma and Charlene Zammit led the Maltese side to a convincing victory in their inaugural match at the UEFA Women’s Under 16’s Development tournament. A sole goal from Maia Debono in the first half followed by a brace from Demi Magrin in the second 45 minutes, saw the Maltese seeing off the Liechtenstein.  Malta started the first 45 minutes strongly and they almost forged ahead when Maria Farrugia fired a shot from the edge of the box, but her effort went wide. Few minutes later, Celeste Grech attempted another shot from outside the box but she completely missed the target. The Maltese continued to boss the game but they could not beat Liechtenstein’s goalkeeper until the 23rd minute, when Maia Debono netted for Malta. A poor goal kick from the goalkeeper dropped on her feet and without thinking twice, she fired a shot in the far post to break the deadlock. The goal seemed to have reignited confidence into the Maltese girls as they kept on pressing and giving a hard time to Liechtenstein’s back line. In a span of two minutes, Sarah Urpani and Michaela Felice missed the target on a couple of separate occasions. Coach Dorianne Theuma introduced several new faces in the second half including super sub Demi Magrin who earlier in the second half netted a brace to secure the victory for the Maltese side. Despite playing against the wind, Dorianne Theuma’s team kept on dominating the game and could easily increase their lead. Liechtenstein made the score more respectable in the dying minutes through Sophia Hurumann’s direct free kick to end the match at 3-1 for the Maltese girls. Malta’s starting XI: Patricia Ebejer; Chloe Ann Ellul, Kimberley Borg, Leanne Cefai, Nicole Sciberras, Celeste Grech, Kathryn Ellul, Maia Debono, Michaela Felice, Sarah Urpani, Maria Farrugia.
