Malta suffered a narrow defeat of 1-0 against the Republic of Ireland in the first match of Group 6 of the UEFA Qualifying Round at the Regional Sports, Waterford. The goal that gave the first three points to the Irish came after 17 minutes from Eoghan Stokes. Wayne Attard's side had a good performance and even managed to find the net in the 30th minute but the goal was disallowed for a very dubious offside. Malta pressed a lot in the second half and even earned 6 corners against the 5 for the Irish. In the other match of the same Group, Switzerland crushed Gibraltar 8-0. Malta will be playing the second match of the Group tomorrow against the Swiss. The standings in Group 6 are now as follows: Group 6 PPts Switzerland13 Republic of Ireland13 Malta10 Gibraltar10 The starting line-ups for both squads were:  Republic of IrelandMalta1Bossin (GK)1Shranz (GK)2Baba (C)3Brincat3Moseley5Micallef4Kelleher117Zammit725Toner8Grech6Dimaio10Degabriele (C)807Grego-Cox11Mbong8Charsley14Ghio9Manning8315J.
