SEPTEMBER 2016

 

 

  • 01 September 2016  FIFA referee Trustin Farrugia Cann officiated the European Under-21 Championship 2017 Group 6 match Spainvs San Marinoplayed at Estadio Municipal Castalia, in Castellón.  His assistant referees were FIFA officials William Debattista and Jurgen Spiteri, while Elite referee Glen Tonna was Fourth Official.  UEFA Referee Observer Edward Foley from Republic of Ireland assessed the performance of the officials; while Duncan Fraser from Scotland was the UEFA Match Delegate.

 

  • 02 to 04 September 2016  The annual pre-season seminar for Futsal referees was held at De La Salle College.  This year the main lecturer was FIFA Instructor and UEFA Referee Observer Andrea Lastrucci, one of the pioneers of Futsal Refereeing in Europe, who started his career as FIFA Instructor in 2004.  Mr. Lastrucci’s main topics covered during the seminar were Communication and Co-operation between the refereeing team, Uniformity and Consistency of Decisions, Dealing with Simulation and Mass Confrontation, and Psychological and Mental Preparation of the match.  All referees underwent FIFA fitness test and overall results were satisfactory.  The seminar was addressed also by Director of Refereeing, Kevin Azzopardi.

 

·         02 to 11 September 2016  After his designation for the Euro Beach Soccer League 2016 Promotion Final and Superfinalin Catania, international Referee Jude Amin Utulu travelled directlyfrom Sicily to the northern Italian seaside resort town of Jesolo to participate in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2017 –Europe Qualifier.  Just before the start of the tournament,a FIFA Course was held during which match officials had training sessions and the FIFA fitness tests under the organisation of a FIFA fitness Instructor.  The participating teamswere Spain, Switzerland, France, Portugal, Hungary, Russia, Poland, Italy, Greece, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, England, Estonia, Belarus, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Norway, Austria, Kazakhstan, Germany, Denmark, Georgia, Lithuania, Serbia.  Jude Amin Utulu officiated the competition’s first semi-final match betweenPortugal and Switzerland. The four semi-finalists will be going to the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2017.

 

  • 06 September 2016  FIFA Referee Clayton Pisani officiated a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification – Preliminary Competition European Zone Group B match, between Andorra and Latvia (0-1) at  Estadi NacionalAndorra la Vella(Andorra).  FIFA officials Alan Camilleri and Edward Spiteri as assistant referees, and Fyodor Zammit as Fourth Official, accompanied Clayton Pisani in this match.  The FIFA Referee Assessor was Kristinn Jakobsson (Iceland); while Michael Appleby (England) was appointed as FIFA Match Commissioner.

 

  • 15 September 2016  FIFA referee Clayton Pisani officiated the UEL 2016/2017 – Group D Matchday 1 encounter AZ (Nederlands) vsDundalk FC(Republic of Ireland) played in AZ Stadion (Alkmaar).  His team included FIFA assistant referees Alan Camilleri and Mitchell Scerri, FIFA referee Trustin Farrugia Cann and Elite referee Philip Farrugia as additional assistant referees, while FIFA assistant referee Duncan Sultana was the Fourth Official.  UEFA Referee Observer Michel Piraux from Belgium assessed the performance of the officials; while the UEFA Match Delegate wasMetin Kazancıoğlu from Turkey.

 

  • 20 September 2016  FIFA Referee Esther Azzopardi officiated the European Women’s Championship 2017 Qualifying Stage Group 2 match Republic of Ireland vs Portugal, played atTallaght Stadiumin Dublin.  Her assistant referees were Biljana Atanasovski (FYR of Macedonia) and Polyxeni Irodotou (Cyprus), with Sarah Dyas (Republic of Ireland)as Fourth Official.  UEFA Referee Observer Desislava Ralkova (Bulgaria) assessed the performance of the officials; while Katarzyna Wierzbowska (Poland) was the UEFA Delegate.

 

  • 24 September 2016  A Promotional Activity on Refereeing was held at City Gate,Valletta. The activity focusedon the Referees Academy with the promotional stand manned by same Academy students together with the officials from the Recruitment and Retention Unit.

 

  • 27 September 2016  Referees’ Committee Meeting chaired by Alex Manfrè, Malta FA Vice-President

 

·         28 September 2016  Former referee and referee observer Charles Ebejer passed away, aged 70.

 

30 September to 21 October  2016  International referee Esther Azzopardiwas appointed to officiate in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Jordan 2916. 17 referees and 28 assistant referees were chosen from all 6 confederations from over the world; the 4 European referees were from Malta, Portugal, Russia and the Czech Republic.  All officials arrived in Amman, the capital city of Jordan,a week before for an intense preparatory week, which involved video analysis of match situations, decision making and Laws of the Game tests; and also further fitness tests and checks.  The 15 participating teams with hosts Jordan formed the following groups:Group A: Jordan, Spain, Mexico, New Zealand; Group B: Venezuela, Germany, Cameroon, Canada; Group C: Nigeria, Brasil, England, Korea DPR; and Group D: USA, Paraguay, Ghana, Japan.
