  • 31 January to 04  February 2016  Newly-appointed FIFA Referees Trustin Farrugia Cann and Fyodor Zammit attended the 25th UEFA Introductory Course for International Referees in Limassol, Cyprus, tailor-made for the 43 male and female European referees on the FIFA list for the first time in 2016, during which theyreceived various administrative and technical instructions from UEFA Referees Committee officers and members, and support staff such as physical trainers, doctors, physios and masseurs. The topics covered included Management Control, Severity of Offences, Free Kick Management, Illegal use of the Arms, Simulation, Advantage, Handball and The Role and Responsibility of the AAR.  Participants were also lectured on Accurate Assessment Under Pressure, Current Trends in Top Level Football, and Match-Fixing Awareness.  The course was not only classroom based but included various practical sessions on the field of play.  The participants had to pass a Laws of the Game Test, and underwent a weighing and body fat measurement session, a medical examination, a visual test, and the challenging yo-yo fitness test. Trustin Farrugia Cann and Fyodor Zammit were also interviewed by UEFA Referees’ Committee members to ensure their suitability as international referees.


  • 03 and 04 February 2016  FIFA tests under the supervision of referees’ fitness coach Ronald Zammit, were held for all categories of match officials at St. Aloysius sports complex track.


  • 09 and 10 February 2016  Winter Seminar for match officials and Referee Observers inpreparation for the final and crucial stages of the various leagues organised by the Malta Football Association and its affiliated associations, was held at the Centenary Hall in Ta’Qali.  UEFA Elite German Referee Dr Felix Brych, one of the officials selected for the upcoming EURO 2016 in France, was the Malta FA’s special guest who prepared a presentation entitled ‘Modern Football Refereeing’ which focused on trends in modern football in terms of preparation, fitness, positioning and understanding of football.  Other notable presentations includedTowards Achieving Excellent Performancesby Director of Refereeing Adrian Casha, Fatigue Management for Optimising Physical Performance by Referees’ Fitness Coach Ronald Zammit, Nutrition for Performance by Football Nutrition Specialist Dorianne Caruana Bonnici and The Referee’s Management of the Game – A Coach’s Perspective by Football Coach Stephen Azzopardi.  The theme of the two-day seminar was The 3Ps: PLAN – PREPARE – PERFORM.


·        05 to 09 February 2016  A UEFA Women’s Under-16 Development Tournament was held in Malta with the participation of Austria, Azerbaijan and Liechtenstein.  Matches were played at the Centenary Stadium.  Maltese officials presently in the Talent & Mentor programme, namely Theodore Zammit, Darryl Agius, Kieran Parnis, Shaun Calleja, Daniel Portelli, Dusan Petrovic, Ivan Galea and Christopher Azzopardi controlled all matches. The appointed referee observer at this tournament was Mr Antonio P. Briguglio.


·        10 to 12 February 2016  UEFA referee observers Adrian D. Casha and Gaetano De Gabriele, attended a UEFA Referee Observer Course in Athens.


·        13 February 2016  FIFA referee Clayton Pisani won the Official of the Year 2015 during the Malta Sport Awards gala evening.    


  • 15 February 2016  Official of the Year 2015 FIFA referee Clayton Pisani participated in the national broadcaster’s TVM’s morning programme with the otherSport Malta Awardsfinalists.


  • 19 February 2016   Official of the Year 2015 FIFA referee Clayton Pisani was invited on the national broadcaster’s TVM’seveningprogrammeSports Panorama.


  • 24 February 2016  Interviews held at the Refereeing Department’s offices with referees David Castillo, Ishmael Barbara, Darryl Agius, Alex Johnson, Theodore Zammit, Andrea Naudi, Keith Montebello, Mark Deguara, Massimo Axisa, Rico Aquilina, Robert Curtis and Joanna Vassallo about their careers so far, were aired during ONE TV’s afternoon programme Kalamita.
