Malta's Path in UEFA Nations League Revealed: Drawn into Group D

Malta will play against Moldova and Andorra in the 2024-25 Nations League campaign that will kick off in September 2024.  Draw was held on Thursday, February 8, 2024, in Paris, France. Malta, eager to make its mark in the tournament, discovered its fate in League D, as the draw determined the opponents they will face in the upcoming competition to be played in the last quarter of the year.

“This time round we are motivated that what was not reached in the past, through hard work and commitment  will be achieved in this edition. Everyone should unite behind our national team in pursuit of this objective.”

Malta National Team Coach Michele Marcolini said “The draw should not change our approach towards the competition.  Our focus should remain on working hard towards obtaining promotion.  I trust the qualities of my team.”

Malta is featured in League D2 which is made up of three teams.  The other three teams make up Group D1. 

From Pot 1 one nation between Gibraltar and Lithuania will play in League D, which team will be determined from the March play-outs, together with the already relegated nation from League C, and Moldova.

Malta, placed in Pot 2, was part of the draw for League D alongside Andorra, San Marino, and Liechtenstein. The draw resulted in the formation of two groups of three teams each, with Malta finding itself in Group D2.

Schedule and Format

The league phase games are scheduled to kick off in September 2024, providing teams ample time to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead.  The teams finishing first in their respective group classification will be automatically promoted to League C, however for the first time there will also be playoffs between the two best-ranked fourth-placed teams from League C and the two runne4rs up from League D.  The culmination of the tournament will see the finals taking place in June 2025, to be hosted by one of the four nations that successfully qualify.
