International officials Alan Mario Sant as referee, and Luke Portelli and Christopher Francalanza as assistant referees, together with other FIFA officials from France, Greece, Romania, Czech Republic, Scotland, Angola and Japan, earlier this month took charge of various matches from the Festival international Espoirs de football (also known as Toulon tournament). The national youth teams of England, Czech Republic, France, Scotland, Wales (UEFA), Angola and Ivory Coast (CAF), Bahrain, Indonesia and Japan (AFC), Brazil (CONMEBOL), and Cuba (CONCACAF) participated in the tournament. After being on duty on every matchday during the group stage (a total of three), the Maltese trio controlled the match for third and fourth place. Scotland defeated the Czech Republic 3-0. MFA Referee Committee member Stephen Mallia was part of the Maltese contingent in Toulon. Mallia carried out duties as referee observer in several matches, including the final that saw England beat the Ivory Coast 5-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at the Stade de Lattre, Aubagne. He was also a member of the tournament’s refereeing commission along with Michel Vautrot from France and Michel Piraux from Belgium.
