National team players mingled freely with the enthusiastic residents of the Young Offenders Unit (YOURS) and signed a number of football shirts during a visit to the correctional facility in Mtaħleb this morning. Malta captain Michael Mifsud, Paul Fenech, Bjorn Kristensen, Jean Paul Farrugia and Steve Pisani, together with national coach Pietro Ghedin and performance coach Luca Pagani, were on hand to present football kits, track suits and other equipment to the YOURS residents as part of the Malta Football Association’s Football for Life programme. The Malta FA delegation, led by General Secretary Dr Angelo Chetcuti, was warmly welcomed by Paul De Battista, the Director of the Corradino Correctional Facility (CCF) in the presence of Manolito Micallef, himself an active player who oversees the football-related activities at both the CCF and YOURS. Dr Chetcuti said: “From our point of view, we feel privileged to be here. The national team players are present as well... they always make themselves available for these kind of visits. “The MFA President, Norman Darmanin Demajo, has these initiatives at heart. We try to capitalise on the popularity of football to support good causes and help those in need. “I’m convinced that we have left these kits and equipment in very good hands because, as Mano (Micallef) has told me, you are very passionate about the game and therefore these outfits will surely come in handy.” Besides donating a sizeable consignment of footballing apparel to YOURS, the Malta FA is also assisting with the installation of a new artificial turf pitch at the Mtaħleb facility. Works on this project have already started. The CCF Director expressed his appreciation for the Malta FA’s continued support and wished the best of luck to Ghedin and the national team players for Sunday’s 2018 World Cup Group F qualifier against Slovakia at the National Stadium.
